I've been towing 7,800 lbs. trailers for 18 years with Chevy/Dodge 1/2 ton trucks with no problems. My reason for the 1500s was the same as yours originally; now retired. In 2003 we took an Alaska caravan and paired off with different folks as we traveled and beat every diesel to the hilltops. What I've learned is that you don't need a lot of torque at low RPM to tow a trailer. It's best to have max horsepower at speed (I like 60 mph) for good trailer towing performance. Of course engine performance and more gears have made it even better over the years. Enjoy!
