Shocks are rarely the determining factor regarding towing. They dampen, for lack of a better word, the TV springs. If you are helping hitch and unhitch and drive the TT now, you’ll find little additional effort needed for a 5er, just a little different.

Depends on how mechanically inclined you are. I have seen women hooking up or assisting with the hook up of a 5er. As long as you follow a hook up sequence and do not get distracted, I believe it would be something anyone with a little mechanical ability could do. The first couple of hookups by yourself would be the most difficult for you. With time and experience as you hook and unhook you will become more sure of yourself and eventually you will complete the task with ease.

You mention that you would be doing this alone because your husband would be working. Does that mean you will be driving and backing the 5er by yourself? Not a difficult task, but it is certainly different and more complicated than driving the family auto to the grocery store. With practice and experience you should become proficient at driving and backing the 5er.

In either case, go slow, think ahead on what your next step will be and try to keep the distractions to a minimum.

My parents had a small business when I was a kid and my mom drove the trailer at times. She could hook and unhook the 40' box. If you can follow directions to bake a cake you can hook and unhook a 5th wheel. There is nothing heavy about it, you only need to think.

There are thousand of women driving over the road tractor-trailers, and there's no reason you can't manage a travel trailer, whether 5'ver or bumper pull as well. All it takes is practice, just like any other driving skill. That said, a Class C or A does take less skill to back up, since it doesn't bend in the middle. ;)

I could hook up and tow any of our trailers-utility, pop-up, 5er-but could not for the life of me back up. My recommendation would be just to practice a lot. As far as the actually hooking up as K Charles said if you can follow instructions you can do it, along with the rest of the trailer set-up. If you get a Class A or Class C you'll have to decide if you want to pull a toad or not. I could hook and unhook the toad no issue and found backing up our Endura easy enough, even at 35 feet. All will have pros and cons-you just have to decide what is most important to you.

Advice if changing tow vehicles to tow bigger travel trailers and or 5th wheel trailers.... know the trucks capacities ex weight axle rating, lager trailers need bigger trucks and most rv salesmen will tell you that truck A cannot pull camper A yet camper A is the largest 5th wheel on lot yet truck A is a 1/2 ton ford/chevy/dodge etc... you need to know what ever truck your looking to purchase is a good match to the tt/5th wheel you want to buy to many times its been brought up that I have said truck and salesman said I had enough truck to pull it but find out I needed a 3/4 ton or 1 ton srw or dually truck. Just make sure you do your research if you go tt/5th wheel best of luck

My vote is for a Class C. Your husband doesn't like towing and you sound some what unsure.
With the C, all the facilities are available while traveling. That's really nice if you're sitting in a traffic jam with kids. JMO

I'd recommend a Class A rather than a Class C. A Class A gives you a lot more room in the driver/front passenger area and a much better view out of the front window without the overhanging structure for the overhead bed. We started out with a 26' Class C, but found it too limiting for external visibility.

We switched to a 32' Class A and were very happy with it. Unfortunately, when we had the rig, gas was up around $4.50/gallon and, at around 8 mpg., we were spending more than we could really afford. We gave up after three seasons and are no longer RVers.

My experience says go to the 5th wheel. We had a small TT, then a smaller 5th wheel, and now we have what is likely our last camper, a larger 5th wheel. It pulls easier, big trucks don't blow you off the road, and is much quicker to hook/unhook. As stated above, if you can follow directions you will be just fine.

BTW, a larger tow (more power) vehicle is necessary for most 5th wheels. I like my diesel, but it's getting a bit old and replacing it will be expensive.
