The 2010 just got done doing most of its depreciating.
But running an empty diesel for commuting is financially painful.
But buying a new F150 and starting the depreciation curve all over again is also painful.
The depreciation on a new F150 would buy a lot of diesel for the more capable, older truck.
I have no idea which option is better financially, but the older truck is a better truck in my opinion. Those first 3 years of depreciation are brutal.
Actually, the 2013 F150 was used. I sold the 2010 F350 for $34,000CAD and bought the 2013 F150 $32,000CAD. I think I made out pretty good in the deal. The original sticker on it was $65,000CAD 1 year ago. I bought it privately from a guy that buys a new truck every year for business use.
It's amazing how cheap you can get vehicles when you pay cash on a private sale. It's kinda a fun story how I ended up at this point with this truck. About 7 years ago, I paid $11,000 for a Smart Car and put it up for sale right away and sold it a few months later for $15,000. So, made a whole bunch of lowball offers on Kijiji (our version of Craigslist) until someone said yes, then would put vehicle up for sale. I would drive it until someone made me an offer for more than I paid. After a series of 8 buys and sells(over 7 years), I ended up with a 2013 F150 Platinum.
Here was my route:
Smart Car - BMW 528i - Dodge Durango - Chevy Avalanche - Yukon XL 2500 - Cadillac Escalade - F350 - F150
It was fun. I am going to start the process over again for a vehicle for my wife.
