Since you are noting the engine sounds different, I'd say the fuel is different, or temperature is different, or wind is different. Are you using an additive sometimes?
I get better mileage on some stretches of road. For instance, I get better mileage going West on some sections and East on other sections. Some of that is due to the grade of the road. It's not just this current truck.
I get worse mileage in wind and better mileage behind other vehicles which I guess is related.
