it'a NOT head/tail winds or modest elevation gains since I have done the same roads back to back in opposite directions.

I honestly believe that there's some significant difference in the fuels... or something else that changes when I fill-up (e.g. changes in the fit of the fuel cap). I just haven't yet been able to prove that this is the case.
