I calculate each fill up my whole life and especially with diesel you have big fuel variations.
To the degree that when I was driving long-distance more often, I bought 105 gallons auxiliary tank to fill it up in Salt Lake City to have fuel for San Francisco.
Not only diesel in SLC was much cheaper, but also deliver 10-15% better mpg.
The same better mpg I recorded on G-diesel that was sold in Nevada, but can't find it anymore.
Per my small investigation, West Coast gets diesel from CA refineries, where fuel is badly diluted with environmental stuff.
Central states get fuel from Wyoming and that runs much farther.
Occasionally diesel filled up in Las Vegas would give me much higher mpg, what I think was due some fuel in this city coming from Wyoming.
That said, sometimes other factors play role. In my travels on I-5 I always record better mpg going south, than north.
Took me couple seasons to figure out desert winds.
California left lane idiots can lower mpg in my car by good 15%, while trips take longer.
