Are you sure you didn't have a tail wind sneaking up on you? I've seen that twice where my mileage went WAY up, like around 35-40MPG ! The engine sounded quietier too, and when arriving in Quartzsite from Santa Clarita I knew something was wrong since I had hardly burned 1/3 tank. All this was due to a huge tail wind that continued from LA, through the Banning pass and nearly all the way to Blythe. Both times this happened across the desert.
