When you "fill up", could there be air trapped sometimes at the top of the tank, keeping from getting a full fill up?

I calculate each fill up my whole life and especially with diesel you have big fuel variations.
I am finding this to be true... and looking for a explanation so that I can buy the "better" fuel more often.

Ethanol------------Diesel Fuel WHEN did that start :H
I don't know... this is the first time I've seen such a label on a diesel pump. I'll try to swing by today and snap a photo. Will also inquire at the station to see if they have any real knowledge (guessing they don't).

Are you sure you didn't have a tail wind sneaking up on you?

me thinks your avg speed has changed.
Nope, it's not wind or speed. I have ruled both of those out over the past few days with long drives over the same road in both directions... always diving the posted limit. Definitely not enough variation in wind or speed to account for the change in MPG.
One other possibility I haven't ruled out is that it has something to do with my truck... Could something be changing within my fuel injectors or fuel pump? An issue with the rail pressure ensure perhaps? Some glitch in the TPS or ECU (I do use a programmer)?
Thanks for al of the input. Keep the good ideas coming!
