On our trip to Alaska, I kept close track of mileage as you did. We averaged 11.5 for the whole trip. An RV tech suggested we try keeping the RPM's at and below 2000 as much as possible and not use the cruise control. It requires concentration, but yields 14+ MPG. Of course mountain roads and head winds reduce the MPG sharply.
We have diesel here, below $2.00 per gallon, which helps lower the sting.
