Regarding how you were filling up the tank at stations: How do you fill all the way up to the top of the filler neck? Our RV is gas, not diesel ... but gas pumps shut off way before the gas reaches the top of the filler neck.
Filling our tank can be all over the map each time I fill up, unless I stand there and "trickle fill" another 4-5 gallons into the tank. This takes an additional 8-10 minutes and I don't always do it. Basing our mileage on what the pump reads each time I fill it can introduce errors into the math when it's based on how much I'm able to get into the tank each time. Probably pump shut off mechanisms vary a lot, too.
