The fuel industry recommends NOT topping off the GASOLINE tanks of modern vehicles due to too high a fuel level possibly damaging the vehicles sensor and/or emissions componts. Supposedly this practice can lead to costing money to repair the vehicle.
If I didn't spend 8-10 additional minutes "trickle filling" my Ford based RV's gas fuel tank at stations, I'd only have a 50 gallon tank in it instead of it's advertised 55 gallon capacity.
I regularly can get 5 more gallons into it after pump nozzles shut off. When I do this I still do not see gasoline at the top of the neck, so I could probably squeeze in even more. I don't think that Ford intends that it's V10 E450 cutaway van motorhome chassis carry only 50 gallons of fuel. So far no problem doing this after 9 years and 61,000+ miles.
I even do this with our family sedan ... it takes at least 1.6 gallons more after pump nozzles shut off ... again, without me seeing gasoling at the top of the neck. I wonder how many folks are wasting time and energy by hunting for stations and then stopping to fill up too often due to manufacturers not figuring out how to design their vehicles such that their X gallon fuel tanks can actually be filled to X usable gallons?
I for one hate the time and energy to fuel up, ... so stretching out the time between refills suits me fine. I once had a Dodge van with about only a 26 gallon gas tank ... so I installed an additional 40 gallon tank in it up high out of the way right alongside the frame. What a joy it was on trips to have to fuel up only occasionally!
