The fresh diesel getting better mileage makes the most sense. Cetane will evaporate out of diesel, just like octane out of gasoline. My guess would be you got some fresh diesel, thus the better mileage.
Driving s semi, buying fuel from truck stops, the mileage was very consistent. I do the same with my p/u and get almost the same mileage all the time.
