  • I've seen this before... This clip is from a 70's show called "Car and Track" hosted by Bud Lindemann.. This series was shown on Speedvision (now Speed) around 10 years ago.. I used to watch it every morning before heading to work. :)
  • Very cool. Who knew you could do a 360 with a 5th wheel and a vw bug!?
  • I saw this months ago, but I loved seeing again! I watched it more than once! lol
  • Even that which is old is new to someone. The good ones keep going around over and over. Even though many have seen it before, thanks for posting.
  • The fifth wheel is pretty modern looking for back then.

I wonder how you reinforce the VW so it doesn't crush the roof? I woudl think that would be pretty expensive and possible intruding.
  • Bug's had a purty tough roof to begin with. You could flip them upside down and spin them around on the roof without much damage to the car. The roof was much of the support for the car. (The car was still little pieces of junk though) It would have needed some extra support for sure but, not as much as you might think. The biggest problem would have been the car was so underpowered it could barley pull itself. There Is no way it could tow anything else.
  • Technical point - that is not a fifth-wheel. A fifth-wheel is a coupler mechanism, and that trailer used a ball. Gooseneck would be a closer description, though still a bit off.

The trailer is small and looking at just the dimensions it would appear to have less than 25% tongue weight. I'd guess that as long as you didn't want to go fast, the rig would work okay.
