JMTANDEM: This is the TC forum. Do you really have the solar roof space to support a compressor fridge plus parasitic loads that you NEVER need to recharge via gen or shore? There are very very few Class A's that can even do that
Nobody said all the solar has to be on the roof. Some can be on the roof of an enclosed utility trailer that is towed or stand alone portable units deployed on the ground. My comment was more to the issue of propane and that the OP compared his old school unit to a new compressor refer by mostly discussing propane usage. I do think enough solar could be captured in sunny places to continuously run a compressor with some supplemental portable units if needed and a roof of solar panels. Yea, I live in a sunny region. I know some places have days and days of clouds that make solar less desirable.
What would have been very interesting to me would have been a comparison by the OP between the cost of propane and solar. I suspect the refer could run a long time on propane for what solar would cost, batteries, and the charging controllers. Maybe there never would be a realistic break even point especially in places where solar is less efficient. But assuming you have solar already and live in sunny places, I vote compressor.
I do like the OP's discussion about fixing the original unit's install and the immediate benefits therefrom. That is a good comparison.
