Yep, driver error. Shift down and maybe even ease up on the throttle a little.
Gas-engine trucks have their good points but expecting your truck to fly effortlessly up a grade with an 8000 pound trailer as if it were no big deal is diesel territory. You don't need to go buy one, yours will work fine, just don't work the thing to death.
