Those who are telling you to slow down are doing you no favours. Under 45-50 mph, the torque converter is likely unlocked, and the truck isn't getting much cooling air, especially if there is a tailwind. My dad had the same issue, solved by speeding up and keeping his foot down solved it.
Also, if you were pushing it hard, how would it be hunting for gears? Realistically each gear covers about a 30mph range, and unless you drive near the upper or lower limits, it generally won't shift unless you are pumping at the accelerator.
Foot down, engine revving where it needs to be, that's the most effortless way to make it up a grade. You can also limit the range on the Fords.
As for the smell.....new trucks smell funny when worked hard, you won't hurt that truck by pushing it hard.
