Anybody consider a semi for a tow vehicle?

Been looking around for a newer truck to pull our new 5th wheel and several people I know have gone and purchased semi trucks for towing. Have been pointed towards a single drive axle type truck for better turning in campground. Have checked into this and they are really affordable! Can find used trucks with less than 300k for under $10k some as new as 2008. Anybody tow with a semi? Any issues with this theory? Not considering this yet as I need way more info.

Most class 8 are 10-13 speed manual tranny and overkill for even the biggest RV. Are you sure you want to be a gear jammer? Unfortunately most class 6 are usually less than 300 HP but more likely to have a Allison auto tranny or a 6-7 speed synchronized manual. Also, most have some type of body so no hitch. The Cat 3126 powered truck rarely make it to 500K without engine problems... read what's been done to this truck. The Cummins 8.3 is a much better engine but many trucks with a Cummins will be the 5.9 or newer 6.7. Extended cab or crew cab trucks are very rare, especially if it has 300+ and an Allison. I looked for over a year before I found a M2 crew cab with a 330 MB/Allison. I was not willing to spend this much money on one.
  • So clearly this is something that is being done. I just spoke with a friend of mine that drives a big rig and hauls fuel for a living and he told me the company gave him a new truck a few years back and the only service it needed was a clutch at 770k, that incredible! I'm going to dig deeper but am now going to give this some serious thought!
  • I ordered a Class 6 cab chassis and had custom built a rig to haul my Ultra (click on View Profile) in a barn behind the cab and tow my Mobile Suites but if I were doing it over, I would go the used class 8 in a heartbeat.
  • I recently saw a semi truck in Montana with a small flat bed for his toad and a boom to lower it to the ground. It was towing a large travel trailer.
