Anybody have a Xantrex Freedom HFS inverter? Does it whine?

A couple of years ago I installed a Magnum 612 charger/inverter. It does what I need, but when it is inverting it makes a whining noise. It gets louder with load. It's loud enough I do not leave it on at night so I can sleep. Just called Magnum to see if the sine wave version (mms 1012) would be any quieter and they said no.

The competing product from Xantrex is the Freedom HFS. I would like to know if it makes any noise while inverting.

  • I have the Xantrex Freedom 2000W inverter. Don't know about the HFS. The only thing I can hear is the fan which is quite variable depending on the load and we alway turn ours off at night unless hooked to shore power which is almost never.

  • No, not the fans. It's the magnetics.

    "Why do transformers hum?"

"Because they don't know the words...."

Sorry about that. :) The Xantrex Prosine 2.0 that I have had would start up the fans under a load, and sometimes inexplicably in the night. It was silent but for that. I have a large Mastervolt on the boat, it will start the fans with a good load too, but otherwise silent. This Magnum buzzes as soon as you turn the inverter on, even with no load. With a load, it is quite loud in my opinion. Magnum tech support says "that's normal, can't be avoided". Except at Mastervolt and Xantrex I guess?
  • Is it the fans? My Cotek does that with 4 fans, but only inverting a heavy load. I guess it's one sound I can sleep through.
