The rockies will test you because for one, depending upon the elevation you are at when there, lets say 10K' like vail pass or the highest point in Yellowstone, with a std gas v8, you will be down 2-3% HP per 1000', so 20-30% on you hp/torque in the rockies! There is NOT a gear ratio change to make up this difference. THe only TRUE real way to fix this is a super or turbo charger on the motor! THen you can get to 10K' or so with out losing any HP/torque from the motor.
My other point, is the rockies have some of the fewest what I would call steep grades that I have found. Other than being long, which can tax cooling systems. For steep hills, ie as I mentioned above, come to Seattle, I can find you steep grades that will stall out ANY truck! yes been there done that, Hence why bridge overpass's do not worry me!
