My theory: Because of your engine speed when you killed cruise, it enabled the fuel cut. Going overspeed is allowed when you're engine braking (ditto the DuraMax) but I forgot how much it allows. If you used the brakes to slow down, it would have kept out of the fuel cut.

PS - Some of the aftermarket solutions like BD brake will allow the factory engine braking to work much better.
