Powerstroke CP4

Just want to know what folks have done regarding their fuel pumps. Please tell me your experience. I'm considering going preventative with either the S&S disaster prevention kit or DCR replacement. Thanks.

  • I have been contenplating the desaster prevention kit also, its funny, I look at it every year and don't buy one.  My procastanation has paid off though.  the S&S diesel desaster prevention kint V2.1 is the gold standard.  all factory quick conect fuel fitting making instalation a lot less prone to leaks.  It has also been out long enough there are several copy cat kits from overseas that are significantly cheeper.

HERE is a link to the S&S product page and you can scroll down to see what is involved with the instalation also.

  • I have a 2016 F350 with the 6.7 diesel. I had the S&S DPK added to my CP4. This way if it does fail the replacement cost should be much less. I also use the Archoil additive with every fill up. I would recommend at the very least the S&S DPK. Good luck.

      shadow4,

Nice, someone with actual experience. You had it installed. So you hired it out? Who'd you get to do the install?

I had a local mechanic do my install. He is a former Ford Master Mechanic and has done any work I have needed in the past. I had a 2003 F350 previously with the 7.3L diesel. Hopefully I won't need the DPK but I consider it insurance. Good luck.

  • I order my archoil off amazon.  you would probably get it for half the price I do 🙄, but it comes as a 4 pack.  you use 1 OZ for every 10 gal so a bottal usaly does 400 gal of fuel.  so when I get down to my last bottle I reorder.  the only one that was better than archoil in the testing, I can't find in Canada yet.  the archoil is a small bottle, I keep mine behind the rear seat in my 2014 F350 crew cab when I am not hauling, orcarring the truck camper, and I put it in the front storage compartment when I am hauling the 5th wheel.  it is small  maybe 4 or 5 in wide 2 to 2.5 inch thick then 10ish in tall.

  • Thanks StirCrazy. Yes I'm in the USA, and my truck is a 2017 F350 which I plan to keep for some time. All that was in my signature in the old forum. Only 44000 miles, but with retirement approaching I expect to increase my usage, some of it in Canada. I would be interested in seeing those videos.

Others care to relate your experiences?

Ford guys claim Archoil helps save CP4s (along with some other “magic). Recently, Ram guys have been drinking the same koolaid since the CP8 was introduced last year.
It can’t hurt, but the vast majority of ALL trucks running around with no issues for the last 20 years since ULSD was introduced would lead one to believe it is not an issue.
Regarding the pump, disaster prevention kit is cheap insurance since you’re likely out of warranty. I’d slap that on and keep motoring happily.
Never heard of the the DCR pump until now. Sounds like a solution if you have to replace the IP. Otherwise save your $ until that day arrives, if ever.

Thanks Grit_dog. I was impressed by the information I saw on the DCR until I saw the warranty: two years excluding labor and everything else incidental. My CP4 has lasted me nine years and replacements come with a three year warranty. I'll probably do what you and StirCrazy suggest.

Still wondering what others have done. Please share.

I will see if I can find the good ones again, they did wear scar tests for different additives and cetane tests, the one I got was the second best for the lubracation, the best one isn't available in Canada that I have found.  you have the same cp4 as I do, I think it was 2020 when the first updated one came out and then in 2024 for the 3rd advancment.  I would for sure do the desaster prevention kit, make sure you buy a second generation kit not the original.  I am even thinking of putting one on mine, but not because I expect it to blow, but maybe more of a just incase 🤣  I do also plan on visiting the USA again when the prresent situation is over and that would mean using USA diesel so might as well be safe.

      here is a good video

Can we become the 11th province? Fix the diesel plus🙂 a few other things.

  • depends, if you live in the USA then a desaster prevention kit most definatly, I would do a new pump when the pump actualy packs it in and you need to get one.  in the mean time a good additive like archoil AR6500 will give you the lubracation and cetane USA diesel lacks. As for the DCR it is still new, I believe it was introduced about 2 or 3 years ago and there is not enough data for me to be able to recomend if it is the way to go.   also the year of your CP4 makes a big difference.  there are 4 or 5 generations of it out and each one better than the previous.  since you were talking about the dcr replacment I am assuming you have a 6.7 powerstroke, but the year will tell you which generation of cp4 you have

the issue isn't the pump its self, but the diesel we use in north america, perticulary in the USA.  in Europe they have a less than 1% failure rate, in the USA that is up around 8 or 9% and in Canada it is back down around 1%.   the reason is the lubricity standards in european fuel, the USA didn't follow the same levels and hence is wearing out more pumps.  Canada did follow the european specs for lubracation.  I am in Canada and I still run a lubracation additive, make sure its a good one, most are not good at all, if Ican find the testing videos again I will post them for you.  the other issue both USA and Canada have is wedidn't follow the cetane requirments of their deisel also, hence we don't get the fuel milage they do.  so I add a bit of that back also.

Are these additives commonly available at fuel stations or truck stops? Not sure I want to be carrying a big jug of the stuff when I'm on the road.
