You did nothing wrong, you can use cruise whenever you want. Your truck does have an exhaust brake, just not a very strong one. The transmission, when in tow/haul will choose whatever gear is necessary for braking or power to maintain the set cruise speed. It is not unusual for it to shift into second gear, if you know for a fact that the redline was exceeded, then there is something wrong and a code may have been set in the computer. Have it checked at a dealer as soon as possible, serious damage may result if the engine speed is too high.
