You did nothing wrong, you can use cruise whenever you want. Your truck does have an exhaust brake, just not a very strong one. The transmission, when in tow/haul will choose whatever gear is necessary for braking or power to maintain the set cruise speed. It is not unusual for it to shift into second gear, if you know for a fact that the redline was exceeded, then there is something wrong and a code may have been set in the computer. Have it checked at a dealer as soon as possible, serious damage may result if the engine speed is too high.

Nope! There are certain parameters that it must stay in, if those are exceeded the truck will take care of itself so it doesn't grenade itself. The circumstances in he OP l's post were just right to make what happened happen!
Turn off cruise and use manual mode with the exhaust brake and you will have no more problems.
I've heard of that grade out there and it isn't meant to be driven without drive input!
I stand by what I wrote. The OP had warning lights so something malfunctioned and that could lead to a grenade experience.
I have towed 46 states with a truck like the OP's. I opt for the more extreme, scenic routes and have no issues. I use it like designed and there is no need to play with the gears, it just works.
