Arctic/Polar/Cold weather packages.

Hi again. And sorry again if this is covered in 100 other threads...

Was visiting a dealer local to me about two weeks ago to look at a camper that we think is "the one" ;) when we can pull the trigger later in the year.

While I'm chatting with the sales guy I ask him if he ever ordered his campers with the Arctic option for the brand we're looking at. I think I made it obvious to him that I thought this option was a good thing to have and was basically waving extra money in his face.

So his reaction kinda made me do a double take. He scoffed at the idea and stated in so many words that he never ordered his units with the Arctic package because he thought it was a huge waste of money...

I even told him I wanted the option of not only more comfortably extending my camping season/options but that I had read that this May help with Air Conditioning in summer...

Still he dismissed the very idea. Stating he thought it was a waste.

Another dealer located an hour or so farther away from me will sometimes make a big deal about having the Arctic package and to top it off they seem to be quoting a price several thousand lower... Unless I was getting some bait and switch. I made it clear to both dealers that I was doing homework only at this point...

The dealer closest to me scoffs at the idea of a Arctic package but "seems" to still be asking a lot more $$$ for the same Trailer. The guy farther away seems to make a big deal out of the Arctic package and "seems" be have a lot better prices...

I'm just trying to figure out - what I'm missing? Are these Arctic packages a waste? This one would include an enclosed, insulated, heated underbelly and some sort of foil extra insulation in the roof as opposed to just a enclosed underbelly in the standard version of the trailer... Is it a waste? It was less than 1,000 according to the manufacturers web site. Maybe one of these dealers are playing some game I don't get... I'm just worrying and maybe confused. You thoughts or experience is welcome.

  • I have an Artic Fox 25Y, true 4 season trailer and added the therma pane windows, best option I ordered. You only have one chance to get this trailer built right.
    No regrets here.
    Enjoy.

Thanks everybody. In the case of the unit I'm looking at the Standard unit has an enclosed underbelly.

The Arctic package says that it includes an "Enclosed, insulated, and heated underbelly" (not just enclosed) and "foil insulation in the roof". I think this is a $700 option according the the manufacturer... Thermal windows are not included in that price but are available as another option.

I want to be comfortable then as well as being able to maybe get a early start/late end to camping. I'm thinking the money isn't a whole lot different and that its a worthwhile option... But that one dealer really made me question if I was just being hyped...

As other have said, cold weather packages can be very different between manufacturers. You need to do your homework as to what exactly is included in aech package.

    Heated holding tanks, for example:

Some manufacturers will say they have heated tanks, when, all they have is an enclosed underbelly. A small amout of heat will radiate through the floor, to warm your tanks.

Some enclose the belly and run heating ductwork near the tanks. Some radiant heat will warm the tanks.

Some enclose the belly, run ductwork near the tanks, and provide an opening for heated air to blow on the tanks.

Some enclose the belly, run ductwork near the tanks, provide heated air blowing on, or near the tanks, and install electric heat pads directly on the tanks.

They all say "We have heated holding tanks".

Arctic, Polar, and 4 Season packages could be something simple as an enclosed underbelly or extra layer of plastic wrap, something extreme as an extra 2 inches of insulation, or anywhere in between.

It appears this Arctic package, does nothing for sidewalls and windows. It is mostly pointed at warming your holding tanks.

The key questions, on your Arctic package, should be:

Between standard model and Arctic model, what is the difference in "R" values for the roof and floor?

How is the underbelly heated? (Heated air, radiant heat from floor or ductwork, etc)
  • Thanks everybody. In the case of the unit I'm looking at the Standard unit has an enclosed underbelly.

I will not be camping in mid winter where we can get below 0F temps at night but I would be maybe camping at the beach or in Florida in summer (Think Fort Wilderness/Disney during June) heck it gets plenty hot and humid here in Ohio fornthat matter! I want to be comfortable then as well as being able to maybe get a early start/late end to camping. I'm thinking the money isn't a whole lot different and that its a worthwhile option... • As others have said depends on what comes in the package. We have a true 4 season coach, the extras on ours is double pane windows, and tank heaters. We also have an enclosed under belly but that's standard on Arctic Foxes.
  • Some are good..some aren't much more than a lot of hype and a decal by the door. Very few will make much difference unless they come with a significant increase in R values and have insulated glass windows. Wouldn't make much difference to me.

    B.O.
  • Just be sure you know what an Arctic Package really includes.

Otherwise the local guy likes to sell base model stuff at a loaded price.
  • We bought our Creekside because of the 4 season package.I like the heated underbelly and tank valves.Floor is warmer and the unit is just plain more comfortable.I would think it would be worth getting in any brand trailer if has heated tanks and floor, and more insulation. We use it a lot in early spring all the way into November.
  • Hi,

Artic packages make the rv more comfortable year round. They are quieter inside, too.
  • 4 Seasons Packages are NOT a waste of money. I wouldn't have ordered mine without the dual pane glass, etc!

  • Maybe he has one on a back lot that doesn't have the Arctic/Polar package that he plans on "finding" and offering to you. It could even be on a local dealer lot that he knows he can get for a good deal. Maybe even get it from the factory but already built. The point is, maybe he doesn't want to order one because he can make more money on an existing (maybe left-over) unit.

PS: I agree with you: Get all the insulation, insulated glass, belly wrap, tank heaters, increased furnace A/C size you can get.
