The Class 2b really are derated Class 3 trucks on paper. As posted, this allows them to stay under certain restrictions applied to heavier trucks. You can configure options on a F250 that will will make it identical to a F350 except for door sticker, exterior badging and 2" shorter rear axle block. People that talk about overloading a Class 2b are referring the paper and not the capability when comparing the same load on a SRW Class 3.
Once you get into the Class 3 DRW trucks, you start to see larger brakes, heavier suspension and bigger axles on some makes. That's where people mistakenly assume that the Class 3 SRW shares all these DRW components.
You will also notice that diesels typically get heavier suspension packages (and sometimes axles) than their gasoline counterparts raising their GVWR and GAWR. This is to preserve their payload while carrying the heavier engine.
The more you dig into the ratings assigned to the trucks, the more you will realize that the numbers posted are marketing and class driven rather than engineering limits. Only by taking the entire manufacturer offering and paring out the weight differentials between configurations do you start to understand the limits. I dug deeply into my Ford 3/4t parts verses the 1t to find very few deltas in the components used between them.
