to add: Chrysler advised when I wrote to them about the math error on my door sticker (5200 front + 6200 rear = 10000 :h ) they replied that some jurisdictions require a CDL for vehicles over 10000 GVWR so the industry prints a door sticker to meet these less than 10000 GVWR requirements.
Think about how you would load a truck to its max while distributing the load such that the Axle ratings were precisely met. The axle capabilities provide some leeway in how the truck can be loaded to GVWR.
GVWR is the weight at which the whole unit is tested to meet Federal Safety and Emission standards.
While a Manufacturer may void warranty on a truck loaded beyond GVWR it it a lot more than just a warranty number.
As to the 10,000# max, in addition to drivers licence requirements, there are many jurisdictions and Home-owner Association regulations that do not permit a unit over 10,000# GVWR to park on a residential street or driveway. The 250/2500 to 350/3500 differential maintains that separation.
GVWR are getting closer to the total of the GVWR.
My 2001 Ram 250 has a GVWR of 8,800# and axles of 5,200# and 6,084# so my GVWR is about 78% of axle ratings.
Yours at 5,200 and 6,200 and a GVWR of 10,000# is just below 88%
The 8,200# GVWR F150 with axles of 4,000 and 4,800 is 93%.
Most rear axle ratings are driven by tires, but in some the springs.
I asked Chrysler by writing to their body builder's contact email what component exactly limits my vehicle to it's ratings - no can do that's a Secret.
Every heavy duty truck I've been involved with the GVWR adds up to the axle GAWR's. Weight rating limiting component or specification is not a secret at all - it will be clearly shared with you if you ask, and stated in writing. They will also examine an existing vehicles specs and advise if you want to change the ratings for some reason.
