Anyone can do anything they like with their truck. As far as I'm concerned the Maker of my truck has established limits that they have published in writing that I am not to exceed and I don't intend to. Specualting about what the differences actually are is pointless since only the engineering/design team has the data to speak definitively on the subject.
Apparently not! The OP has done a good job of identifying non engineering reasons for the different weight ratings not based in sound engineering data.
Unfortunately it is still all speculation unless he has inside information of what the individual specs are for each component. Add to that the entire platform is rated as a system and not necessarliy a sum of its parts possibly (perhaps not) for very good reasons. That's the point though, we don't know why they did it regardless of seemingly obvious reasons including liability of the maker that it will perform in a prescribed manner at capacity. While these discussions are interesting and may shed some insight on what is likely to happen as far as performance and safety go they will never change that sticker afixed to the door post.
