The weakest link is probably the sticker on the B-pillar.
Look at the F-350 SRW trucks. You can order them with GVWR "packages" of 10,000#, 11,400#, or get the standard 11,500# GVWR. Exact same truck, but different GVWR's (and rated cargo capacities). The only difference is with the lighter GVWR packages you are choosing to license it to carry less. Has absolutely nothing to do with the truck's capability.
Wow, I did not know that. I went to go build an F350 on Fords site and clear as day there were multiple GVWR options with no difference between them. Although, I can see why some would want to do this. Here in Texas, the 6,001-10,000 GVWR registration is $54 and the 10,001-18,000 GVWR registration is $110. Although that is pennies compared to the costs of these vehicles, but if one had a fleet of trucks then that would quickly add up.
So it seems it is not just because of truck class, but also registration as to why they de-rate the 250/2500 in order to be below 10,000 GVWR even though the specs say these trucks can handle much more. I am not saying a 250/2500 is the same as a 350/3500, but I do believe the sticker rating on the diesel 250/2500s are considerably low compared to what it really can handle going by its specs.
