I've thought about this a bit more and I think the payload rating is a fairly useless number. On a Ram 2500 6.4 vs the CTD, the RAWR for both is the same for both trucks (6,000). Everybody knows the CTD weighs more but nearly all of the extra weight is carried by the front axle - the weight on the rear axle of the CTD when empty is only 50 lbs heavier than it is on the 6.4. So if the RAWR is the same on both trucks and the weight on the rear axle of the CTD is only 50 lbs heavier, it seems silly to me that the payload on the CTD is nearly 1,000 lbs lower. Obviously the payload penalty is due to the extra weight on the front axle, but the rear axle is where the vast bulk of any load or hitch weight is going to be carried.
Payload is a marketing number on 2500 series trucks.
