I just made the switch from a gasser to a diesel. For towing, I'll never go back. The extra muscle is fantastic, really exceptional. I can pass at 65mph with a 8,000 lb trailer attached. With my gasser, I couldn't do 65mph if I wanted better fuel economy than about 5mpg. Forget passing with my gasser!
Diesel engine maintenance is an issue if you don't maintain it regularly. Skip oil changes, let things fall apart, and you'll quickly have nasty repair bills. Treat it well, and you'll have a very reliable engine.
