Very good advice. I'm less worried about costs per mile than getting stranded. Since this will be a daily driver (likely a Ford F-350 SRW shortbed since I have the worksheet built for it), stuffing an oil evac pump hose down the crankcase and slurping four gallons of oil out, pulling and replacing the oil filter, then tossing in synthetic (assuming it is to manufacturer specs) isn't that hard to do. However, having a full pee can and the engine refusing to start is a different story.
The main reason I'm looking at a diesel is for hitting Colorado. Any of the Big Three have a turbo diesel engine that will lose a lot less power when at higher elevations compared to a gasser (the Ford's EB is the exception because of the added boost.) The second reason is that diesel is easier to store than gasoline.
