Was at a car dealer out of town, and the dealer (name with-held to protect the guilty) was trying to warn me away from a diesel on the 3500 models he was selling, unless I had at least $15,000 a year ...

We had a gas coach and went to diesel, will never go back. Yes the service is more but in the long run you will be happier. This last May I drove a 1996, 3500 Dodge (I think it has a 6.9 turbo) towing a 5er horse trailer loaded :)from Sparta Wi. to Eddy Texas to help a friend move. The vehicle had 165,000 miles and ran like a top, tons of power and got 16.8 MPG. Far as a tow vehicle I think you can't go wrong.
