Since your question is very specific- cost per mile- this is all you need:
Price per gallon divided by miles per gallon = cost per mile
Ex.: $4/gal fuel burning in a vehicle getting 12mpg = $0.33 per mile
Depends entirely on the 2 vehicles being compared, regardless of fuel type. A gasoline Civic is going to be cheaper to operate than a F350 diesel, a diesel Jetta is going to be cheaper to operate than a 8.1L V8 GM pickup.
Cost per mile is a very case-by-case comparison, but very simple to calculate.
Well the OP's questions was "Are diesels worth it, for costs per mile?"
I would think that any diesel owner pulling over 10,000# will answer Yes!
I am sure there are those that have had some issues with their diesel that may be a little less enthusiastic, but as a whole yes.
Cost per mile is really the TOTAL cost of ownership of the TV divided by the TOTAL miles driven.
The reason for that statement is that while a diesel cost more up front, it also has a higher resale when you replace it. That $8,000 up front for a diesel, may return $4,000 at trade in.
Fuel cost depends when you drive the most, currently here in the greater Portland area gas and diesel are neck in neck for price, diesel get better fuel mileage both pulling and empty.
Last to the Gas guy's that say HP is everything, please explain to me, how 270 HP tows 11,000# (19,000# GCVW) at 60 mph up 6% and 7% grades, with 3.55 gears?
