I think the big issue that separates a diesel from a gasser is the chance of water in the fuel. For the most part the trucks are identical. Same trannies, suspension, etc. Gassers that get water in the fuel don't have $10,000 in repairs. To me that is the only caveat for owning a diesel. If that never happens then cost of ownership is a wash IMO.
Take a 1000 mile trip in a gasser towing 10-12,000lbs getting 9 mpg and take the same trip in a diesel getting 11 mpg and figuring fuel prices close right now the diesel will save $80.00 on the trip. Do that 4 times a year and that's $320.00. That pretty much covers the extra cost of oil, def, fuel filters.
When the fuel price is greater then of course the benefits diminish.
