Are slides safe to use in the closed position?

It will depend upon the manufacturer's recommendation.

Our prior rv was a 2009 Class A and it was ok to use the dinette & sofa which were on the full-wall slide. Our current trailer manual does not recommend using the furniture with the slides in.

You really need to have a look at the manual for whatever units that you are considering.
