Are slides safe to use in the closed position?

We are looking for a double bunk travel trailer with a dinette and sofa in the slide. We would like to be able to use it closed while stopped. We have two boys that will be jumping on everything a...

My manual and dealer tech told me not to use the slide area when retracted, because it can bend the slide rails and mechanism. So I stay off the couch when the slide is in. The rest of the slide is that kitchen sink and stove, which doesn't exert any weight when using.
