Are slides safe to use in the closed position?

If you are dead set on doing this. I would at a minimum support it at the corners, and then every 16" just as most floor joists are spaced.

One in the middle IMO is not enough... In my case my big slide would have a 7' span unsupported. That WILL flex a lot.

But this is just not a good idea. Shimming will run the risk of damaging the tile. under the shims
