- AceiExplorerNope, not an engineer. My background is IT - software development, so I have no skills to touch the automobile hardware.
We have been planning full-timing since few years ago, changing our current life style slowly every year towards that (just moved into a small condo, getting rid of 2/3 of what we own). We have put a budget to purchase a 4-year old 40-43ft DMH plus a toad. I doubt this route will cost more. But at least from what I have seen so far, it will allow us to enjoy our lifestyle more. Any how, we were going to heavily modify our Class A as well. - Grit_dogNavigatorAnd try to not take my comments too harshly. I'm not poking fun, rather trying to save you problems and $ for things you don't understand.
- Grit_dogNavigatorAs long as you have the absurd amounts of money to chase your, ahem, strange custom ideas, just go spend some coin on something that already exists....
You've portrayed that you're not an engineer, fabricator or mechanic.
Best to stick with something that exists IMO.
I'm all 3 of the above and can say with great certainty that there aren't many wheels in the RV world that appear to need reinvented...... - AceiExplorerThanks for the ideas guys. :)
Won't be going with slides. If we go this path, this will be a light camper since the truck will have to tow a fairly heavy TT as well. - jimh406Explorer IIIIf you are considering having slides, make sure you go with a company that has been building TCs with slides for several years. Slides seem to be the hardest part to get right with all of the companies. Those that I know about modified their designs several times over the first few years.
- GeewizardExplorerOutfitter Mfg builds custom campers. They did so for me.

The website says, "We are more than just Pop Ups!" Give Robby a call. I expect he'd be happy to talk with you.
Do they make non-popup based campers? It doesn't appear to be the case, although opo-up ones do look interesting... - AceiExplorerYou are correct, I am fishing for some ideas. Right now, one of the possible rig for my full-time setup is to get a 1t truck, put a light truck camper on it, then tow a light custom designed TT, around 26-28ft. Believe it or not, this setup fits us quite well because our needs are rather unusual.
Currently, our plan is to get a 4-year old 40ft Class A + toad, but having an option to sleep and have a small bath in the "toad" is a huge plus for us, hence fishing for this idea.
We have visited many RV sites now, we even went to the Florida one. We have checked out just about all models, including truck campers. - djgExplorerI know that livin lite will customize a camper for you, all aluminum no wood i love the design that I have and someone here on rv net had one built with a spot for an outside fuel tank in the front of their truck bed
- jefe_4x4ExplorerACEI, seems you're just fishing for ideas. The best way to get acquainted with the TC paradigm is to crawl around a few on dealers' lots. You will find out in a hurry if it's for you. Climb up the stairs and climb the big steps to the bed. Lay on the bed Sit around the dinette in every position. Sit on the pot, pull the shower curtain, reach for the wand and reach for the shampoo, soap, and toilet paper. Does everything work for you? Another way is to see what some of the folks on here have put together as a truck and camper. There is plenty of reading material on the good the bad and the ugly about truck camping on this very site, but you will need to do your own leg work if you are actually interested. Beware; it is a quantum drop in size and comfort from any kind of towed rig to the minuscule TC. A lot is packed in there and price per square foot is the highest.
As always, you need to tighten up and refine your 'must haves' to see if you are even in the ball park with a TC. Otherwise, it's all talk and conjecture. There is no 'best' camper for everyone. It is a long way from the Host Everest to the XP Camper, a long way.
