A salesman at a local Ford dealer that I've dealt with for years used to work in the commercial/fleet side of things, and he did know his trucks very well. The fleet guy that I last bought a Chevy from also knew his product well. The local Dodge dealer didn't seem to have anyone who knew or cared about trucks and that is partially why I didn't end up with a Dodge. But like other posters have said the vast majority of salespeople I've dealt with have little or no product knowledge.

I have the best luck speaking to the Commercial truck sales guy or gal. They typically know the product. These are the people that submit bids for Government vehicle requirements and deal with the vehicle specs everyday. If there is anyone in the dealership that will know the pickup truck product it is these people.
Another vote for the fleet sales guys. Mine was a special order truck with option combinations not available in the the trim level I selected and he knew the interaction of combining options. He also dissuaded me from options like the snow plow springs up front if I wasn't actually hanging heavy equipment on the front of the truck because he knew loading on my selected truck and the effect on ride.
