Artic fox 811 or eagle cap 850?

Hi all,

I think I would like to get one of these two truck campers. I've been researching for some time including reading here for several months. I would like to hear from owners of either of these truck campers good or bad what you really like and what you dislike. I'm planning on using a 1ton srw ford or Chevy. I have several years experience and owned 3 travel trailers and two fifth wheels including a large toy hauler but never a truck camper.

Thanks

    Definitely no problem using the Arctic Fox 811 off of the truck, and to the best of my knowledge, the EC 850 should be exactly the same.
  • We have an EC 850 and really like it. We had had several other TCs and a travel trailer. I am always amazed at how much stuff we will accumulate when storage allows and how much we can pare it down when storage is more limited (going from the TT back to a TC)

    Anyway, from what I understand either one can be used while off the truck.

    Both are HEAVY. With OEM tires both will put you over on rear axle rating. I have 3970# capacity tires all around plus upgraded shocks, airbags plus a BigWig sway bar and feel very comfortable driving on the highway and twisty back roads.

    Not a great quality picture, but this is our truck/TC

  • We went from a large 38' motorhome to a TC. Most of the stuff we yanked out of the MH we never used and could easily live without. We found that with a decent size TC and a crew cab truck we can take everything along that we need and then some. Much of the stuff that Rvers carry around in their units isnt really needed anyway.

    I suspect you will really run into storage space problems right off the start especially after having the bigger TT and 5th wheel trailers.

    I have always wanted to have the Truck Camper to go with my style of OFF-ROAD camping but the loss of storage space always turned me against getting one...

    I am quite sure if I owned one I would be also pulling an enclosed utility trailer behind it. With my present OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer setup I have some serious room on the front deck of my trailer setup and the truck's supercab back seat area and covered truck bed... We can carry some serious supplies with this setup...

    You will probably want duallys with the larger and heavier campers...

  • The AF has a vertical pull out pantry on slides between the bath and kitchen.
  • The AF811 is well built but heavy. Expect 4000 lbs by the time you have it loaded. If you go by rear axle capacity verses GVWR, you are fine. I went with 19.5" wheels on my previous F250 since I also tow an 8000 lb trailer at the same time. We also went from a toy hauler to a truck camper, but now tow a 20' enclosed trailer for our toys.

    Eagle Cap was not available locally when we bought our Arctic Fox, but we are considering the EC1165 as an upgrade in a couple of years since AF does not build a side door model at this time.

    Tough choice...both nice high end campers. We went with EC for a few reasons;
    *Dinette bed is larger (our Son sleeps there...sometimes 2 teenage Boys!)
    * No hatch over bed on AF...did not like that
    * Larger bath in EC

    You really need to see both. The above were important to us...but they are both very nice campers.
    Have fun shopping, Bill

    Edit; someone mentioned weight. These are both heavy campers. It was our experience the EC is ~ 400# lighter than the AF.
