As one who was routinely covered in asbestos dust (NAVY & Power Plants) wear dust mask and occasionally spray the material as you remove it.
It is only a problem if inhaled. Mask and working it wet keeps you from inhaling it. Buy some 'paper suits' to wear and then bag them and throw away.
