Assume diesel and gasser have same torque, compare...

Reminds me of a sticker on the top of a crapper(not sure if it was a true crapper brand....but) the other day. It said, "If you have a short bat, step closer to the plate"

So with that, Yes a rig with more hp and the same torque with proper gearing will tow faster than the same rig with a less HP, same torque motor. The how much is another story. My 96 K3500 with a 185/385 diesel with 5 gears, generally speaking was a bit slower, but at times did better than the 235/385 tbi 454 in my 88 K3500 with a 3 sp auto. The kicker was if I could keep which in its power band. The 96 with 5 gears for the most part did better, as it was better setup gear wise. BUT, if on a 3-4% grade in the gear below direct for both, which was about equal in reduction for both, the 454 would out pull the diesel by a few MPH, talking maybe 5mph at 15K lbs.

I made the comparison almost ten years ago with my '03 250hp/460tq SO Cummins Ram to a duplicate '05 345hp/365tq Hemi powered 2500HD towing the same 5th wheel over the same routes around the southeast including Monteagle Pass. The Hemi towed faster up the grades although at 30%~ higher rpm and about 30% higher fuel consumption. 100 more hp beats 100ft/lbs more torque every time on paper and on the road. HP is the rate at which work is done. You can't get around that fact.

That tells me a lot. Your Hemi had a 25% torque deficit, yet did better on uphills. In my situation the hemi has only about a 8% torque deficit. I'm sticking with gas.

The thing that gets overlooked is, they all use gear reduction. Even with less torque, within reason, with more hp you can use more gear reduction to make more torque at the rear axle than the higher flywheel torque engine. High altitudes? Yep, that means less HP and equates to less torque. But work over time is measured as HP.

Yep. My Prius, even with the Xsp package, is putting about 118hp to the ground. Won't pass anything but a gas pump. And that's a wonderful thing!

But that's not what I'm talking about. My point shows how it's the work an engine does that matters to someone towing. A steam engine has very little HP but gobs of towrque. That's how it moves a train.
HP wins what? Races? That is of little consequence to someone towing. Heck, my Prius will stomp any diesel in a race.
Torque is what gets the work done and diesels will always have more of it than gassers.

I have "any diesel" and I'll gladly put your claim to the test, tuned or not. This statement is just plain silly. Heck, I'll even pull my boat behind me when we race. Don't recall a Prius being able to stomp much of anything.
