Atwood Furnace problem

New Atwood Excalibur 8531-1V
New Atwood Hydroflame 2000 thermostat
New Camco Double-Stage Auto-Changeover Regulator
2 7 gallon bottles, full.
No leaks or kinks.
13.6 V from converter to unit. Polarity correct.
70” return air.
Blower runs fine.
Thermo set at 68.

Unit cycles on at 65, blower on, clicks and no flame 3 times. Shuts down and thermo points remain closed. Board lite indicates lockout.

Rests for approx. 10-30 min. more or less, then cycles on, fires up on first, second or third try most of the time, points open at 68, flame off and blower purges normally.

Comes on at 65, shuts down, then begins irratic cycle, fires up 2nd or third try, sometimes flame and lockout.

Unit then repeats the no fire cycle.

No regular pattern.

Took it to an Atwood Service center and they said they couldn't get it to fail with their bench test. Would a board test make sense?

Any advice would be appreciated. Atwood does not respond to my email.

  • Getting good leads to try.
    Thanks to all.
    We'll get it cured.
  • I know you say you have a new regulator, but mine was only a year old when it went. And I'm not sure about the quality of the CAMCO regulator. Think my replacement was a Marshall.

The furnace worked fine on the bench, but the regulator wouldn't feed it enough gas when in the trailer.

The tech tested the pressure near the furnace using a gas gauge.

    Good luck.
  • On the bench because it is installed in a 30' Dutchman than I cannot tow with my 4 cyl. Toyota PU. They had me pull it and take it to the nearest Atwood Service Center for a checkup. A 50 mile+ round trip thru some beautiful country so I'm not complaining.
  • Wow, I didn't know there was a "Dallas. OR.

Mine does the same from time to time. Very strange because it is so random.

I'm betting on either the sail switch or the sail switch not being activated due to limited motion.
  • Don,
Unit is on the bench in Dayton, Waterdog RV, they are keeping it overnight to see if it will fail.
    Thanks for your reply.
I'll go get it tomorrow or Fri., reinstall it to get through the cold spell and contact you if I may.
If you have any questions or suggestions I am open to all advice.
