I've seen guys who fly the large scale (80" wingspan or more) remote control planes do that. One gentleman had a huge Piper Cub with a 120" wingspan. He could fly into the wind, drop throttle slowly and hover. He was also able to cut throttle just enough to start to slip backwards. One of the coolest sights I've seen.
