Avoiding blow overs

I live in an area with industrial wind turbines so I am very use to towing in windy conditions. 30-40 mph gusts are common and still not a big deal. Thursday we were on a north south interstate when a horrible storm blew through. After the fact we learned that the gusts were in the 60-70 mph range. Traffic dropped to 30 mph and people were just plain stopping not even completely off the interstate, pretty stupid.

I thought the semi truck in front of me was going over and I pretty much thought I would be going with him. Knowing pulling over or stopping was no solution I took the very next exit and turned into the storm. While visibility was next to none I managed to find a lot to park facing the wind.

Not a pleasant memory and experienced muscle cramps in my shoulders that evening. Other than doing what I did any suggestions for when you find in such a situation?
  • Keep your tanks full to lower the center of gravity is my only thought.
Personally I prefer the elusive tailwind.
  • An underpass may increase wind speed, depending on the direction. My trailer tows fine at 60 mph so pointing it into the wind when parked, is an easy deal.
  • You did a good job.

Another thing you could do is get under an over pass or snuggle up to a big building mall structure. Get next to anything that is anchored down and can break the wind.
