I use to use exclusively the RV awning cleaners, as rockhillmanor pointed out. But for the last several years, I've been using only a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Wipe it on, follow with a dry towel and wipe it off (Do not scrub). Works wonderful and the chemicals in the eraser prevent black growth from coming back. It won't solve bird poo or squashed bugs when rolling up, but it will remove them when you clean again. But everything else, like all that black stuff, just does not come back.
My wife found the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the mop handle now. I used it this Spring the first time, and OMG was it so much easier than climbing a ladder or standing on a picnic table.
Same principle though, just wipe it and follow with a dry cloth to remove the dirt.
How often? In the Spring, and then throughout the year, touch-up's with the eraser for bug squashes. And... it stays white all winter too, when rolled up!
Easier methods, maybe yes? But how often do you have to do it?
Been using the eraser for at least 10 years now. No harm to the awning.
