He's right. I use those "De-flappers" the things that tie the sides of the awning to the side frame on a manual awning, and I use 4 of them with 2 of them only about a foot from the top edge which is where most awnings rip. I also tie mine down with dog tie-out screw anchors or 5gal jugs of water if over hard deck. I also will sometimes lower the awning fairly low so that the wind is more likely to go over rather than under.
All of that said I might just roll it up if it gets to bad, but I would still use it if it's not to windy, but with these things mine has held fine in some pretty good breezes. Watch the weather reports for the storms and I think you would be fine.
