Axle Codes

I know Ford places axle codes on the door jamb sticker of every truck but does Chevy and Ram do the same? I've been helping my brother-in-law look for a truck and we can't figure out what axle the trucks have.
  • Thanks for all the assistance. I find it interesting that Ram does not for certain have a sticker somewhere in the cab area that states the axle code. Seems like a lot of work to crawl under the truck to check if a code is posted somewhere underneath.
  • Took this from another site.

    There are a few ways...

    1. It's on a metal tag affixed to the rear diff, usually bolted through on the diff cover.

    2. There may be a sticker in your glovebox.

    3. Go to the link below, click on the other link, fill in the info and get a build sheet for your truck by VIN. It will tell you exactly how it was built.

or could be a sticker on axle with the ratio on it.

THe G80 description in the link isn't entirely correct.... it's not a "limited slip"

G80 is actually a locking rear differential, the Eaton unit.

yup, it's an automatically locking differential, substantially different than a posi unit in many respects
    1) allows 100% torque split
    2) won't engage above about 25mph

something no posi unit I'm aware of will do.

Why would the OP have to Google it? ... all he has to do is click on that link to GM RPO codes I provided. ;)
  • As mentioned, the code will be in the glove box.

G80 : AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP
    GU4 : AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
    GU5 : AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
    GU6 : AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
    GT4 : AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
    GT5 : AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
  • Yep, glovebox will have a grey sticker full of codes. Then you'll have to decifer the codes (Google will be helpful). It'll take some time, but you'll learn all sorts of stuff about the truck.

Any Chevy I owned including my current Avalanche this information is shown on the glove box RPO sticker.
