axle rating

I have a 2015 GMC 3500 SRW 4x4 SLT with just about every option available, pay load on the door sticker is 3800 lbs, you should be within 100 lbs.

Use this clicky link from GM. The feature doesn't come up on the 2015 models yet. It gives each individual trucks front and rear axle weights with the options you choose.
Simply click on "models and options weights" and then "weight calculator". This will get you close to your trucks as shipped weights. This doesn't take into account other necessary "junk" we put in our trucks.

Many one ton SRW trucks rear axle may weigh in the 2900-3100 lb range which leaves in the 4000 lb range for a payload.
Play around with the calculator. Wish Ford and Dodge had this feature for finding actual weights

Even manufacturer GCWR is driven by marketing. For Ram to get that magical 30K lb tow rating, they have one truck that has a GCWR 37,900 lbs. However, the parts are the same as offered in the 37,500 or 32,500 GCWR versions (just packaged differently).

GVWR is a theoretical number that is used for the DOT and state DMV. The GCWR is a real number in terms of what the vehicle can handle in total weight of the truck, passengers, gear, and towed load.

Less than 3% of the load over the rear axle of my truck is transferred to the front wheels so I do not worry about the frond and focus on the rear. The axle and wheel bearings with SRW are not the limiting factor, only the tires and springs, both of which can be upgraded.

Easiest and cheapest for the factory to add two more wheels but if I wanted more capacity I would do what is done with military vehicles and go higher rated tires like 19.5 ones.

Over 29,000 lbs. total weight for the vehicle and trailer and you pass into commercial trucking territory where a special license is needed and insurance costs more and there are other costs that should be expected.

The rear axle weight rating from AAM on the rear axle on my truck is 11,800#...but with tires on my truck, has a rating of 9750# from Ran......Don't need to increase anything at this time, I'm even under GVWR of 14,000# on my truck:)

AAM rates their axles in kilos in their technical documentation and lots of people don't do the conversion accurately at 2.2 lbs. per kilo and so do not get the actual 10,900 axle load rating but are off by 10%.

The GM 2500HD Duramax has a different rear axle than the 2500HD with the gas engine. My 2011 2500HD came with a higher payload rating than some of the GM 3500HD trucks. Lots of reasons why this is the case.

With my 2011 Duramax 2500HD the GM brake part numbers, front and rear, are the same as those for the 3500HD non-dually truck for ALL of the brake parts, including the rotors and calibers. The parts only change for 3500HD trucks with dual rear wheels. The dual rear wheels increases the GCWR by 4700 lbs. and so there is a possible need for improved braking with the DRW 3500HD Duramax trucks.

F60 is the GM snow plow option code

Ordered that for the 1 ton torsion bars, though my Front GAWR remains the same
as a non-F60. Front calipers & disc are the same dia as a 2500, but thicker. Eyeball
can't see and have to mic it to be fore sure

AAM supplies the 10.5" rear diff and rates it 10,000 GAWR, but GM rates it 6,000 GAWR
on mine and the 1 ton dually of the same year. Difference is that the shoes are
wider on the 1 ton, but my 2500 Sub's are also same width. Why parts counter
always ask what width. The cylinder is also larger bore, as is the MC.

assume the proportioning valve is also different between the 2500 & 3500, but
that is just a guess

We outsiders will never truly know what the weak link(s) are...

Some of the GM/Chevy trucks have a front end designed to support the weight of a snow plow. At one point it was an option and later it was standard and for 2015 who knows?

The front suspension also bears the added 800 lb. weight of a diesel engine if that is used with the truck. But the trailer weight if anything reduces the weight on the front wheels (if the rear sags too much) but certainly does not add to the load at the front so you can ignore the front and pay attention to the back.

Again, the factory calculations are based on the weakest link when the truck left the factory. You can easily upgrade that weak link which will be the leaf springs or the rims and tires by adding to the leaf pack or adding overload springs or air bags or replacing the rims and or the tires.

The GCWR, which factors in the frame and overall suspension and engine and transmission and drivetrain components, is the one number that cannot be changed for a vehicle. I want to keep the total weight of my truck and its payload and the trailer load well under that amount.

IDK which one is wrong but the GMC website says the front axle rating is 4800lbs but that link with the weights says its 5600lbs.

EDIT Just checked Chevys website and it says 5600 so GMCs is wrong. :S
