Yup u just confirmed it Reddog1, Most people don't have a clue as to the law.
Which does vary greatly from state to state, sometimes with exemptions for light loads, commercial etc. The AAA provides a summary by state if you want to google it.
GA for example is pretty restrictive. Enforcement is another issue.
However my point is that the engineers that design the suspension systems design them as a system, including a significant safety factor.not all components in the linked system have the same strength. It is the opinion of the manufacturer that these limits cannot be exceeded.
If you are in a serious accident with an overloaded vehicle do you thing your insurance is valid? 'Technically your vehicle is not roadworthy.
